Tara Rice | Biography

Originally from Guelph, Ontario, but frequently feeling displaced throughout her life, Tara, like many a wandering soul, found solace in being creative. Writing songs of angst and wonder, traveling and often living on the street in her guitar case while being followed by mad women and wolves, she finally squeaked through her teenage years, got a fixed address, a computer and taught herself to record music at home. Tara then began writing and recording with the intent to release her own album of vocal-driven, introspective and multi-layered music. Why the hell not?

Shortly after its release in 2003, Tara's self-produced, debut solo album, "Face" garnered a nomination for Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter from the International Resource Group's Independent Music Awards. She also won first place in the "Cool Tunes" song writing competition and her song "Madness" was featured on the independent Canadian film "Magnus Opus." The album went on to receive national airplay and many thoughtful and positive reviews including one from the webzine “Sloe Gin Fix” who described her music as “lovely and unlimited.”

Although difficult to pigeon-hole, Tara’s solo music has been described as whimsical alternative folk and is a captivating mix of natural acoustic and classical guitar instrumentals paired with unique programmed arrangements and the passion of her distinctive vocal approach and thoughtful lyrics.
